Half of all my games freeze after about 30 seconds of playing. my stationary
computer is a month old and has all the reccomended spesifications. I tried
to download new drivers for my nvdia geforce 6800 le video card but it didnt
work. I also tried to cool down the computer and dust the fans but non of
this works. I checked with people i know and they say it might be a hardware
issue.
Here is a list of the games that freezes: Half-Life 2, Morowind the elder
scrolls 3, Newerwinternights, XIII.
I hope somone can help me as this problem is driving me mad.

Hi Hides,

You're tried some of this already, so it sounds like it's the power supply.

Hardware issues can cause freezing, black screens and other
errors. Also, your drivers should always be kept up to date.

Try the following steps one at a time to try and resolve the issue.
I hope this helps. Please post back if you have any questions! :)

1. Update DirectX and your Chipset, Sound, &Video Drivers:
For all Video / DirectX / Game and Hardware Issues, I have a
Checklist of Solutions at: http://NibblesNbitsVideo.tk

2. Dust your fans, vents and components using a 1/4" paintbrush
and a hose vacuum. Use compressed air for hard to reach places.
Set a housefan to blow cold air into your case to expose an over-
heating issue.. If it works add more fans or replace defective ones.
Use this Motherboard Monitor Utility: http://mbm.livewiredev.com

3. A faulty power supply can cause STOP errors, random reboots,
and black screen lockups. One way to test for that is to check the
wattage sticker on your power supply and then calculate your need
http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/ (Min. 350 for gaming)

4. Test your RAM using: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Hi Hides,

Yes 300 is low. Usually you'll need 350 for gaming. Try the
link again in step 3 to calculate how much power you'll need.

You didn't state if your 6800 was an Ultra or GT. Nvidia definately
recommends
at least a 480watt power supply, I run a 500. Also, depending on when you
purchased your video card and what version you purchased you may need more
than a driver update. I experienced constant freezes in games like doom3.
The
freeze would either clear itself after several minutes or not. I found that
there was
a problem in the bios in older (first run) 6800 Ultras. I flashed my bios to
the
rev2 nvidia reference bios and my system is as stable as a rock. I'll see if
I can
find some of the articles that led me to the fix....I've also seen articles
that say
turning off AGP fast writes and setting your 2d/3d clock speeds to the same
settings will resolve the problem...

I am having the same trouble with my 6800 LE (Monitor switching off,
have to unplug the machine to reboot)
I read we can flash the card bios: (i am running 5.40.02.22.03)
I've been on MSI website which does not even mention this model :(
are the drivers standard as the 6800 ?
I've alos read we could disable the fastwrite option. But i don' know
where to do so.

Did you find a solution to fix that pb by your side?

Any help dealing this problem would be warmfully welcome
I have wrote MSI support ... will let you know.

Hi kankan,

If you're having the same trouble, do you also have a low wattage
power supply? How much juice is your PS supplying to the system?

You can find a utility named NVHardPage (2.1 i think) at www.guru3d.com.
Once extracted you can run it. There will be an item allowing you to activate
"coolbits, agp options etc". These unlock certain features in the driver. From
there you can go to your display properties->advanced tab. You will then
be able to examine your agp and clocking options. This is where you can
change your clock speeds and turn off fast writes.

It looks like they have updated the bios files..Originally rev2 contained the
latest 5.40.02.10.15 version. I checked the files and this bios version can
be found in the rev4 archive. Note that the problem bios ended with .13..

Hi all thank you for your messages
I am having a 350 W PS, i've been using a Watt Calculator which told
me it was enough with my config.
Nevertheless i was so disapointed about this card that i carried it
back to the shop and purchased a Radeon 9800 PRO :p

i was having the same problem last year playing nhl 2004, game woul

me that may be it, but it wasnt. i later disocverd it was my extra ra
stick, my pc came with512mb drr, i bought additional 512 stick an
found out that it was wrong type. i removed the extra one i bought an
games worked fine, went back to store they gave me new stick and thing
have been 100% since then. so if you have more than 1 stick, try pullin
one out to see if the oem stick works. just a thought

Windows XP is very particular about hardware which matches the specs,
especially RAM. The sticks much exactly match, or the system will throw all
kinds of errors.
