D.

hello ,
when i try to open anything , occasionally
my pointer will become inactive .
this lasts for anywhere between a few
seconds and 20 to 30 seconds .
eventually it will work and there does not
seem to be any pattern to this .
i have checked for malware , spyware and
viruses and none show up .
i use mcafee ( i know , it sucks )
i'm running xp pro , sp2 , ie 7 , oe6 .
any thoughts on this are much appreciated .
TIA ,
Dick

What is the CPU processor speed? How much RAM memory does your computer
have?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

total : 29248

This figure doesn't look right!

cpu : 4-7

I am not sure exacly what you mean?

pf : 294 mb

Is this meant to be the amount of installed RAM memory?

Right click on the My Computer icon on your Desktop and you will see
details of your CPU and installed RAM memory.

What is your computer make and model? Is it a desktop or laptop?

384 mb RAM is below what most users would recommend for running Windows
XP. The normal recommendation would be 512 mb. Your computer has three
sockets so you can add RAM to a maximum of 768 mb. However, with a CPU
processor speed of 450 mhz the processor will alway be a bottleneck.

Many programmes will run OK but you will find poor performance if you
run graphics and photographic applications. Any undo features are
particularly likely to create too high a demand for memory. When you get
a freeze the best thing to do is to be patient and let the task
complete. It will do but it will take time.

There is another cause of freezing and that is dust inside the computer
case. This can lead to over heating. Take the casing off and use an Air
Duster to clean. Also check that all fans are working.
