Computer extremely slow

Lionel A.

Hi,

I have Windows XP home edition on a new laptop bought in
december. I use automatic windows update and I also have
an up-to-date anti-virus. I currently have the following
problems since two days ago.

The computer is extremly slow to boot (up to 20 minutes),
to open any program (several minutes), and to shut down
(another 20 minutes).
I don't have the windows XP interface available any more.
I receive error message saying that my anti-virus failed
to start.
When I minimize a window, I don't see it in the taskbar.
When I try to launch msconfig, I get the following error :
Access denied "..." You may need to log on using an
Administrator account. I am an administrator.
When I try to open the services in the control panl, I get
the following error "error 1307. This security Id can not
be defined as an owner of this object(...)".
When I try to get to the event viewer, I receive an
error "service not started".

When I boot in safe mode, it takes approximately the same
time to boot or to shut down as in regular mode.
I can't run msconfig neither, and I don't see the windows
taskbar.

Can anyone help ne ?

Thanks
Lionel

re-install windows, and if you can back up what you need
and format it.

it sounds like windows has been "tweaked" a little too
much and had been chewed up by tweaks. Make sure you know
what your doing when changing a system file or registry.
You may also want to scan with another virus program.
there are many free ones on the net. www.grisoft.com and
housecall.antivirus.com are some examples
