Computer doesn't start-up now

Laptop, WinXP HE, 20GB HD - the start-up seems normal and when the WinXP
logo appears it cycles for a few seconds the goes back to the very beginning
and starts again - as if the whole thing is just locked into this cycle.
Worked ok yesterday. Nothing seems to help - I've tried changing to Safe
Mode, Last Known Working Config etc - same thing, starts up, gets to WinXP
logo then back to the start again!

Any ideas? I don't want to have to reformat the HD and re-install
everything - apart from anything else will lose some valuable stuff which I
had not yet backed up.

Note that after doing that the OS gets vulnerable, so you must go to Windows
Update and download all the hotfixes.
