Got a new Dell Dimension 2400.

When I do a "shutdown" and then manually restart again the computer
recognizes the CD R/W drive.

Whe I click the "restart' button right away, the computer restarts
automatically, as it should, but doesn't regognize R/W drive. Dell says
"Live with it". The only cure would be to do a complete system re-install.

Any opinions?

Hi:
I had the same problem , there are several solutions, 1.) Slow down the
Bios detect times for Drives, in your Bios( rapid boot on restart skips over
it and so it is not detected and does not show an icon in Windows) 2.)
Adaptec has a download for this problem I have installed it and although not
100% perfect , it works fairly well, it reduces the times on restart the icon
will disappear, the other problem I mentioned above is the reason. The
download I have compressed name is: aspi_471a2 ( size 510KB) , if you cant
find it, send me an e-mail to (e-mail address removed), I'll sent it thru the email
