When I turn on my computer I receive error code 1000-0141
and am told the hard drive is not available (I have
windows XP home). I can't even run safe mode. The
computer tech service (Dell) says I have to replace my
hard drive. Are there any other options? Would it help if
I had a boot disk?

IF you had a boot floppy you COULD determine if the hard drive was present.
But if you installed XP using NTFS then a DOS boot floppy can't see the NTFS
partition.

You could also boot from the XP CD and see if it can find a hard drive.

Check the BIOS and see what it knows about your drives.

You need to enter your motherboards bios upon boot and look and see if the
bios detects the drive. If it doesn't then XP doesn't have a prayer of
being able to see it.
