Computer dead... Need troubleshooting tips

K

I built my own computer. It was on overnight and in the morning it was
silent/dead. I checked that everything was plugged in snuggly. There is
no fan noise, beeps or anything. My initial thought was the power
supply since there was no power supply fan noise etc... I can build a
computer and I can diagnose it when it's at least running, but this
dead-computer stuff is new to me.

How should I proceed as I trouble shoot. What tests/techniques should I
use?

Thanks

First step would be to Test the PSU with a meter.
(No fans, beeps, etc. suggests PSU).
So you will have to try a new PSU.

Try swapping the most likely/easiest to swap component that can produce
those symptoms. Thats most likely the power supply in this case.

If that doesnt fix the problem, its most likely the motherboard.

If it looks like its the motherboard, worth trying it with the motherboard
loose on the desktop before replacing it, you can see a short to case
produce those symptoms and thats the best test for that possibility.

With that symptom, the first thing to try is replacing the PSU. It is the
most likely offender.

If any component OTHER than the power supply goes bad, you will still see
fans running or LEDs lit or some sign of life. But the opposite isn't true.
A power supply can go bad, and you will still see fans running, LEDs lit,
etc. In fact, that's quite common. That's why there are a bazillion posts
complaining about "no video" when power supplies go bad and the users don't
realize it's the power supply, yet. -Dave
