computer crashes if nvidia installed

my video card is the nvidia GeForce 5200, it came with my PC which is a
Dell Dimension 8300 and it is 2 years old. I like to play a lot of PC
games but a while back my PC started acting funny, the colors and
pixels were distorted, and the screen would flash black about every 30
sec. After restarting I got a stop message that read as follows: A
problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage
to your computer. The problem seems to be caused by the following
file: nv4_disp. The device driver got stuck in an infinate loop. This
usually indicates a problem with the device itself or with the device
driver programming the device. Check with manufacturer for updates.
Tech. info. ***STOP: 0x000000EA (0x8655BA38, 0x85EC62D0, 0x86564370,
0x00000001) nv4_disp. Beginning dump of physical memory. So then I
shut it down, restart in safe mode and I get this message first:
Microsoft Windows detected and recovered from a device failure. Please
save your work and reboot to restore full functionality. I know now
after much trial and error that restarting does not restore anything
but the blue screen. So while in safe mode, which is very distorted
and off in color, I uninstalled NVIDIA completely and restarted,
everything seemed fine. So I tried downloading an updated version for
my video card and it stops mid installation(always at 54%) and the
computer crashes. So with NVIDIA installed my computer crashes,
without it, I can use my computer but I can't play any games that
require a 3D graphics card. According to the people at Dell, there is
nothing wrong with the video card itself. What else can I do?

I am not the most computer literate person. I downloaded it from the
NVIDIA website and I also tried from the Dell website. It was the
exact one listed for the graphics card, I don't know what version, but
81.98, sounds familiar. I also tried downloading service pack 2 for XP
and that contains a driver update for NVIDIA, this also did not work. I
am pretty sure I removed everything first. I went into the control
panel, and removed the program.
