computer can't connect

I just installed a new ethernet card. The old one was loaned to a
friend and quick split in two. However I cannot connect to the net
with it. I have an always on connection via a router. The router
works fine, because my other computer still work on it.

Essentially the problem as I see it is that it can't find the "Default
Gateway" and thus isn't communicating. This should be automatically
assigned, so I don't know what is wrong. I have tried uninstalling
the drivers, and reinstalling them to no avail. The computer runs
WinXP Pro.

Just a stab in the dark here, but consider:

My router requires me to add the computer to the network through the web
based router administration software. Could it be that you haven't let the
router add the computer? (To the router, a different MAC address will be
seen as a different computer)
