Help! I have XP Pentium 4 and need to know how to
compressing an e-mail attachment I'm sending so it
doesn't take forever to upload. Please help!!

Go to "Download.com" and download WinZip, a shareware piece of software. Then right click and add to Zip, name it and send it.

Personal preference would be to download Winace... much more functionality

Won't make a difference, you can't compress a .jpg. It is already done!

I didn't see any particular file format mentioned in the OP's post.
If it is a jpg then he/she could open the jpg in an editor and raise the
compression ratio in order to lower the file size.
And/or reduce the X,Y of the image

Right-click on the file and select:
Send To > Compressed (zipped) Folder

Compress it first with a tool like Winzip. And note that there is no
point in trying to compress files like JPG (photos) or MP3 (music).
They are already compressed as far as they will go. For photos use a
tool like IrfanView (www.irfanview.com - free) to change the image
resolution to something appropriate to a computer screen, say 1024x768
at the most, and save as a jpg at not too high a quality (say around
25%)

Many types of files are already compressed. What type of file are you
talking about?
