Compressed version of SDI image?

I am working with a target that has two 1GB compact flash modules. I
would like to remotely update the images on these CF modules with SDI
images.

The problem is that the SDI images are also 1GB (Each). Since the
target only has 1GB of RAM, I cannot copy them down to the device and
image the disk - The RAMDisk isn't large enough.

This also poses a problem with bandwidth usage, since I don't want to
pull two 1GB iamges over the network for every target device.

Is there a "Compressed" format for the images that the SDIMgr can
handle? Most of the image is blank, as I don't use 1/3 of it to store
files presently. I expect that it will compress 10:1 or better. Does
anyone know if Microsoft is working on an SDI format that includes
compression?

Desi,

There is no compressed version of SDI available or supported :-(
You can searcg this NG archive for soem more info. This topic has been already discussed and I recall some suggestions from Slobodan
(packing the SDI content to have all the files at begiining, zero'ing the SDI file unused trail bytes, etc.)

Konstantin,

Yup but this require custom program to read or write data in this case :-(

Apparently storage space and bandwidth are free and plentiful in
Redmond. :)

I have no such luxury. If I want to be able to image these units, I
will have to look for alternate imaging solutions. Compression seems
like such a fundamental feature for a program that deals with imaging
machines, especially freshly-installed ones... There's plenty of
opportunity to compress the unused space on the fresh images, I can't
imagine that they would not do it.

Sigh. Another rough edge. :/
