Compressed folders and other compression types

Question directed at any representatives of MS, I guess:

Is the 'compressed folder' system in Windows XP extensible at all? Is it
possible to 'plug in' other compression types, so that (for example)
Windows sees .tar.gz or .rar files as compressed folders too?

That would be very neat.

Cheers,

Hi,

Though some MSFT folks do attend this and other groups, there is nothing
"official". To make a suggestion, you should go through the user suggestion

No, it's fairly limited. You need third party programs for the others.

AFAIK no, it isn't. It is really there to provide a simple means of
handling the most popular format - zip - without need to get third
party software. Including making zip folders and adding to them while
concealing the underlying .zip file
