Compose Font

I can't change the font that I want to reply to messages with, and compose
messages with.

B

Brenda

I have tried that...it saves the font, but when I try to compose a new email
the font always goes back to Arial

1. That only applies to HTML mail.
2. It won't apply if you use a stationery that specifies a font.

Actually it happens when I run either SpyBot or Spyware Doctor. I ran those
two programs today and my mail settings had changed again, causing me to do
yet another system restore! Any suggestions?

I apologize, it appears I was mistaken about what was causing it. I had it
all back to normal, and then installed 4 Microsoft Updates. Any idea why the
updates would change this font, as well as changing my IE settings back to
default? I have restored, and am waiting for the 4 updates to come up again,
and want to know which one NOT to install.

Sorry, I have no idea which update may have caused you a problem.
I haven't heard of anyone else having a problem with the latest
updates.

Hi,

I went back and uninstalled the updates one by one to find out which one is
giving me the problem. It is KB942615 that keeps switching everything on me,
and won't let me change it back.

According to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942615 , Microsoft has set up
a free support hotline for this update, so give them a call.

I doubt that the problem is in that update. Have you uninstalled it to
check?
I think that it lies in one of your security programs. Changing that
setting involves a Registry change. It might be a security program blocking
the Registry change it needs to make. A few, but not all, of the programs
now doing this are:
Ad-aware's Ad-Watch
IBM Access Connections
McAfee VirusScan and/or Antispyware
Norton AV
Spyware Blaster
Spybot> Tools> IE Tweaks
Spybot- Teatimer
Spysweeper
Spyware Doctor
Windows Defender
Zone Alarm (free) 6.5 Reported to be fixed in later versions.

In the case of Zone Alarm 6.5 or Norton 2007 it actually has to be
uninstalled. Make sure the Windows Firewall is turned on until you
reinstall Zone Alarm.

Boot into Safe Mode with Networking and try the change.

Hi Frank,

I did actually uninstall the 4 updates that this all seemed to start with,
and installed them one at a time to see which one was affecting my computer.
It turned out to be the one that I posted here. As soon as I installed it my
font in IE would change, as well as my font to compose messages in Windows
Mail. I was able to change the IE font back to what I wanted, but not the
Windows Mail font. I do have Ad-aware Ad Watch, but I hadn't run it
yesterday at all, and it's not set to run in the background or anything like
that.

Hi again,

I spent over an hour on the phone with Microsoft...they weren't able to fix
this problem!! I've restored yet again to before that update...and I've
hidden the update...I don't know what else to do! Any suggestions?

It sounds like there is a strange interaction between the KB942615
update and one of your security apps. If you really want to get to
the bottom of this, uninstall all your non-Microsoft security apps,
reboot, then permit KB942615 to install. Try Windows Mail.
If it behaves properly, then one at a time reinstall your security
apps, reboot between each install and test Windows Mail.
Eventually you should hit on the one app causing the problem.

B

Brenda

The only security I have running all the time IS a microsoft product. I use
Windows Live OneCare. Nothing else runs all the time. I run the other scans
manually. Is it a Windows Live OneCare issue?

A security app doesn't have to run to cause trouble.
During its installation it hooks deeply into the innards of the Vista
operating system. So, even with the app not running, the 'hook'
is still there and causes trouble. Many users here, for example,
had disabled their McAfee or Norton antivirus, but no relief was
obtained until after the app was completely uninstalled.

I'm not aware of Windows Live OneCare causing any issues.

Turn off your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs and uninstall KB942615.
Then reinstall it and then turn them back on.

I've decided to just ignore that update. Nothing I've tried is working, so
if I don't install the update I won't have the problem! I just hope
Microsoft comes out with another update to fix it.

Microsoft won't fix something that is essentially caused by a
third party program. I have seen very few complaints about
that update.

Blocking an update can only be considered a very short term
fix. Future additional updates may well depend upon the presence
of the KB942615 update.

I outlined a structured way for you to find out which app is
causing the problem. I don't understand why you are not
interested in finding the culprit.

I have uninstalled everything, reinstalled everything...and did what you
suggested I do. I still have the same problem no matter which way I try to
install things or uninstall things. I'm at a loss as to what to try next,
other than resetting my computer to factory...and I would really prefer not
to do that...
