Component Designer - Updating Components.

Been using this for a while, but have a silly question, i'm sure there
is a simple answer.. Havn't had any formal XPe training, as my company
is too tight to pay for it

if I want to update my released components with new file versions, what
is the general procedure? I have tried simply copying the new files
into the source directory, then "Upgrade Component" in component
designer, then importing into my database, but I get errors about not
being able to delete the existing repoditory. This leads me to believe
I need a new repository? Is this this correct? Where does the package
fit into this? Do I need a new package also?

Anyone got a simple step by step guide to updating self authored
components?

I've never bothered with packages, and I always create a new repository
when I change files, because I'm too lazy to find out if there's a way
of updating them.
