Completey baffled and cant resolve

Hi,

On my sons pc he had an error message which said something like "windowns
has detected a problem and must shut down etc...". Unfortunately, he turned
the pc off at the wall before I could check anything else out.

Since then, we cannot get access to the internet. This is a real problem as
cannot get onto microsoft site to download hotfixes or anything. We also
cannot reload windows xp as we apparently had a duff version but we upgraded
to the real thing online with microsoft - we dont have the original discs
though.

Because we couldnt solve the problem and get online we have since bought a
new pc and tried to network the other to get online through this but still no
joy.

Im not technical at all (can you guess). But if anyone has any ideas why I
wouldnt be able to get on the internet or what I can try please let me know.
It does say the IP address is invalid. I have tried system restore etc but it
just comes up saying cannot restore to the point selected no matter which
date I try. Is this completely knackered ???

just as an quick overview
of the issue it sounds like
your pc would have shut
down with or without your
intervention.

my guess it may due a hardware
issue/problem which was beyond
the ability of the o.s./software to
manage. so it shut down to protect
the rest of the system.

since networking, ip addresses,,
internetting seems to be on
the top of the list, then the
hardware may be the modem
or network card or something
in this area....
