Complete Removal of Active X

J

justme

I know that Active X is a path for viruses to get into a computer. I
am using Win98se and IE 5.x. I disabled Active X in IE and now I get
a message popping up all the time saying I am encountering and unsafe
Active X bla bla bla.... So now I got to keep pounding the Enter Key
to bypass that stupid irritating warning. Since I got Active X
shutoff, who cares if it's unsafe. It also tells me the page wont
load properly, but it always does. If a certain page wont load, then
I dont need to view that page. But like I said, I have never yet
found one that did not load, and I have had Active X disabled for
months, and had to fight with that damn warning message for months
too.

I want to completely remove Active X from my computer. What files or
directory do I need to delete. Do I need to remove any lines in my
registry or anything else?

Thanks for all help

Hello "NoName",

Nope. If you did not load it, it's not there. For as far as I know,
Active-X elements get stored in the "c:\windows\downloaded program" -folder.
Alas, deleting them will not get rid of that blasted message. That message
just tells you that something want's to get downloaded (and you disallowed
it). You *can't* shut it off.

What you can do is look for dummy versions of the most well-known Active-X
components, and re-enable the usage (dangerous, as it would only block the
downloading/usage of *known* objects).

Another option would be to install a filter that will remove any and all
references to unwanted content outof the HTML-files. One such program is
Proxomitron.

Just one thing : Although this program can be used as an install-and-forget
program for *simple filtering*, it's capable of doing very specific
filtering, by executing regular expressions *you can write yourself*.

Personally I'm using Proxomitron for quite some time now, and do like it's
capability in removing all sorts of references to Active-X material, as well
as removal of pop-ups, banners, (information gathering) scripts,
spyware-pixels/images, of-site image references, and all sorts of other
unwanted stuff. I think I can say I like what it does :)

You can't. ActiveX is integral to the Component Object Model upon which
Windows is built. You can only turn off ActiveX elements (scripts and
controls) on web pages but, as you've seen, some pages require them to
function properly. Of course, a well-written page will work whether ActiveX
(or Java or cookies) is on or off. As for the warnings, I use Norton
Internet Security to block all harmful content without prompting. If a site
doesn't work then it's the host's loss -- not mine.

This is the best option and one I also use. Use a firewall to block
all active X by default and only allow it for sites that you implicitly
trust and need active X to work on. That way you can also upgrade
Active X to its latest version so that those programs that do need it
have the best version. If you don't want to go down this route due to
not having a firewall then you are far more at risk than if you have
Active X running.

You can avoid the KB pounding - both for this and any other annoying
popup/confirmation messages - with a handy little program named PTFB (Push
The Freakin' Button) from

Stop using IE, and you won't have to worry about Active-X content on
websites.

I recommend Firefox, Mozilla, or Netscape.

You won't need a popup blocker, Norton, Proximitron, or any of those add-on
programs any more.

Gecko = freedom (and I don't mean car insurance.)

If you stop using IE, then you will not have to worry about Active X. I
recommend that you try Mozilla from www.mozilla.org .

A site that you may regard as "safe" today could easily be hacked tomorrow.
My policy is simple: if the site won't work without ActiveX, then it simply
won't be entertained, period. There is NOTHING that can be done using
ActiveX that can't be done by other safer means. It is simple laziness on
the part of the webmasters.
