Complete Backup of a program

How do you backup programs complete with any drivers, registry entries etc
it may have associated with it. I am faced with migrating to a new computer
and I have lots of "heritage" programs running that were installed years ago
and I have lost the original install disks!!
I have heard of mirror disks. How do they work?
