If I upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows XP Home Edition,
will I have a problem continuing to use Office 97
programs?

In a word, no.

You shouldn't have any compatibility issues, but if you perform an
in-place upgrade from an earlier edition of Windows, and those
applications were already installed, you'll likely have to repair or
reinstall them, so they can add the necessary additional functions
needed for use on a multi-user OS. It may be sufficient to simply
insert the respective installation CDs and select the "Detect and
Repair" option.
