compatability of security upgrades with Zone Alarm

I have been using the free Zone Alarm firewall for two
weeks with no problems. Yesterday I downloaded and
installed 5 security update from the Microsoft site. The
download went okay, taking 12 minutes but the installation
took ages, almost 1 hour. I rebooted okay but nothing
would work. No programs would load and nothing happened
when I clicked desk top icons. Spent ages trying to find
cause and finally deactivated Zone Alarm which got
everything working again. Not wanting to be without
firewall protection, I rebooted & reactivated ZA, again
nothing would work. I have now again disabled ZA which
has got me up and running & has allowed me to post this
message.
Any suggestions out there ?

Boot in Safe Mode, then empty/delete all your Temporary
Internet files including the windows "Internet Log"
directory, also check your Seconday IDE Channel>Advanced
Settings in Device Manager and if the Current Transfer
Mode for Device 0 says "Not Available" then make sure that
the Device Type says "None" and Transfer Mode says "PIO",
otherwise your computer will hang at the log-on screen.
Reboot your computer. You will need to re-allow all your
programs that need connection to the internet.

any thanks for your interest in my problem Andrew, I have
made a copy of your advice. With help from the Zone
Alarm community group, I have resolved my immediate
problem. Simply Uninstalling ZA and then reinstalling it
got me out of trouble. I was also advised to disable ZA
when downloading similar updates in future.

You are most welcome, what may have happened as in my case
is that one or more of those new Microsoft security
patches had corrupted your Zone Alarm logs and settings,
in which case shutting down Zone Alarm and then completely
cleaning/deleting the conetents of the C:\WINNT\Internet
Log directory and then rebooting should have beeen
sufficient without having to have uninstalled/reinstalled
Zone Alarm.

Very Best Regards,

Andrew
