I know how you feel I used to have a presario.. my mom has it now :p

Anyways, compaqs all use the same sound card.. realtek AC'97... I made sure
yours does too(unless you ordered something other than factory settings)

Go to
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

Download either:

Windows 98Gold/98se/Me/2000/XP/2003(32/64 bits) for Driver only. For Windows
98 SE, DirectX(R)8 is required to enable advanced features. (Executable
file)
A3.942006/11/917884k

or

Windows 98Gold/98se/Me/2000/XP/2003(32/64 bits) for Driver only. For Windows
98 SE, DirectX(R)8 is required to enable advanced features. (ZIP
file)A3.942006/11/317955k

for your sound card drivers

GOD I hate dial up! lol. I am currently downloading it from realtek, a friend
of mine had made me a disc, but it stated the driver was not found and to
reboot! What in blazes was that about? As far as I know when I wiped my comp
it took all the presario stuff with it, and when i put this windows xp disk
in(upgrade) I had to use an old windows 98 disc in order for the xp to be
satisfied that I had a version of windows on it(which i didn't cause i had to
wipe the harddrive TOTALLY, but the upgrade disc did accept that i had the
disk from an old install),GOD SHOOT ME! at 1st had no modem acknowledged
either so i couldnt even go online to get what i needed, my friend made me a
disk and mailed it to me, and now here I sit PULLING my hair out and
screaming like a demented person at my comp!

Look at the bright side.... The computer didnt cost that much...(I hope..
its a compaq)

Also, would you rather wait for the mail after someone downloaded and burned
it to a disk(which I think might be about the same time as the download
finishes)?

If you know anyone nearby, steal their cable/dsl connection to download it
and burn it to a disc :p

That driver should work. Try going to device manager > Sound, video, etc >
when you right click on your sound card, if it shows there is a driver click
uninstall, restart and try to install the one you just downloaded again...
thats all I can think of... someone else can take this over :)
