Does Windows Mail compact message stores by default (especially newsgroups
messages), because I no longer see where I can compact the messages anymore?

Looked here?

You don't need to worry about it as much, as the messages are no longer in
the database file itself, but are stored individually.

Correct and they use a considerable greater amount of disk space. The same
newsgroup setup in XP and Outlook Express needed 1.7 MB of storage space
while in Vista and Mail 64 MB of storage space is required.

When I was young and adventurous, I wanted to join a violent,
armed group with no regard for the law, but the IRS wasn't hiring.

The database takes up most of that I imagine, unless you've downloaded all
the newsgroup message bodies.
