Compacting problem

B

Bill

Each time I attempt to compact after about 75% completion I get a message
that WM has stopped working and will be restarted. It appears to be that
Data Execution Prevention has intervened.

What can be causing this?

Bill

Vista Home Premium fully patched.
Run AVG Free and Spyware, Spybot, Adware 2007, W Defender daily with no
problems

Thanks for the suggestion, however I have email scanning disabled in AVG
Anti Virus. I did delete the email account and reinstall, but the problem
continues.

Strangely I have a laptop networked into this PC and I forced a compact
there without any problem .

Only difference is that the desktop contains many more local folders than
the laptop. Is there some size limitation?

You could try Steve's WM de-crapulator:
http://www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/Default.aspx

There was another guy I responded to who wanted to hold on to AVG.
Same deal, really - scanning disabled, not willing to try uninstalling AVG.
He had your compacting problem - I suggested switching to AVAST,
which is also free. Maybe he tried it and it worked - he never posted back.

OK

I've moved on and used oehelp utils - then had to do system restore.

Now I need to know how to get all my Local Folders which are now in
Recovered Messages back to their normal place in the heirarchy.

Hope this makes sense.

Will look at Avast when I sort this out.

Thanks again.

Congratulations! It sounds like AVG wasn't involved. Vista usage has passed
W2K and OSX according to one collector of statistics, but it's still at barely
4% - XP users seem to be over 4/5ths, so you're one of the pioneers.

You seem to have a large WM database which is important to you. If waving
a magic wand would suit you better than crocodile wrestling, then practice
creating and restoring backup, just in case whatever happened happens again.
Moving the store to a non-system drive, if you have one, is also sensible.

Maybe I'm reading stuff into Bill's response, but it looks like he got
more potent ammo than just the free de-crapulator from Steve's site.
Clearly, he solved his problem, so he's the one you want to ask.

My situation was the Win Mail Compact would not complete.

Steps I took were:

1. Run the Compact Database tool from
http://www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/Default.aspx
Completes OK.

2. Try Win Mail Compact - same result - would not complete.

3. Run the Repair Database tool - this has a warning - and it left me with
no
local folders or messages (Panic). Won't use this in a hurry again.

4. Run System Restore. This gets my messages in a number of folders
named "Recovered Messages (date)".

5. Recreate each news server I had - download newsgroups list - subscribe to
those newsgroups I use.

6. Setup Local Folders for every one I archive (e.g. MS for all emails from
MS worth
keeping, ditto from Bank, Etc, etc) - then move all the messages from the
Recovered Messages folders to these new ones.

7. This left me with some problems - e.g. I lost all the watched messages I
had
tagged in several newsgroups, ditto all messages "unread".

8. Tried the suggestion of Exporting the appropriate folder under
C:\Users\Bill\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail to a portable drive.
This failed - too big. Strange - approx 900MB.
Haven't resolved this - looking for a backup tool. Unsure whether normal
copy of this file will work in an emergency. Maybe someone can advise.

9. In summary - I managed to recover sufficiently for my purposes - I'm
retired, so
data is personal, but valuable to me. Were I still in business I'd be
very unhappy.
More good luck than knowledge I'm afraid. I've stuck with AVG AV for now.

BTW - Win Mail Compact works OK now - the original objective!
