In XP one needed to periodically compact email files. Does this still need
to be done in Vista? I don't see any reference to it.

You can go to Tools > Options > Advanced > Maintenance. And you can set it
to compact the files after a certain amount of runs.

Yes - In Mail - Tools - Options - Advanced Tab - Maintenance

You can set a number of days Vista waits to automatically do this.

So one can no longer do it manually anymore? I never let XP do this at
random times because it would tie up the machine. Instead I'd manually run
it when I was done with the machine for awhile.

manually is done by setting the counter to "1" and exiting WM.
when the compacting is done, go back and set the counter to what ever period you like.

I use 5.
so every 5 times I exit WM it compacts.

It doesn't compact email messages, it just compacts the index that keeps
track of the messages. IT doesn't take very long.
It runs when you exit the program. You set it to run after xx many WM/WLM
shutdowns. You can force it, by setting it to 1, and closing the program.

THAT's what I was looking for. An add-on to bring Mail up to the
capabilities of OE.

Thanks. That will help.

If you can string a few lines of code together then you can also tweak this
via the registry

The current count is at

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Compact Check Count

and the 'compact every' count at

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Mail\News\Cache Compact Runs

Setting the former to the latter, and opening / closing Windows mail also
triggers a compacting.
