Guide about setting up and mounting a virtual machine

Tony

Hi,
I need a link to a recent, thorough, yet compact guide about setting up and
mounting a virtual machine XP and Vista- on a Vista Ultimate PC with 4 G
memory and VPC 2007..
Kind regards,

Tony, I can't help you with a guide to VPC 2007 because, currently, I
haven't got around to preparing one. My website does, however, contain a
guide to VMware Workstation.

While VPC 2007 is free it isn't as flexible as VMware workstation; you also
don't get USB support on VPC 2007.

There isn't much to it - use the wizard in Virtual PC to prepare the new VM
(basically you're just deciding how much drive space, memory, etc. to
dedicate to it and what its name should be) and from there you install the
OS for the new VM the same as you would on a "real" computer.

Thanks to all for the advice. I guess the big difference between VMware and
VPC is harware support. I have a network scanner / printer (HP6310) that I
must use and test.

I will be installing Vista and XP Pro on Vista Ultimate and I have a lot uf
USB devices. The software I am testing makes extensive use of USB devices
like a Plantronics USB CS60 headset and the HP 6310, next to a cardreader,
Jabra Bluetooth dongle etc.

Kind regards,
Tony Thijs

Tony, you are not going to get USB support with VPC 2007.

Same answer - if it connects to a USB port, Virtual PC/Virtual Server won't
be able to use the hardware.

You are still going to need USB support on the Virtual Machine; without it
you won't get it to work. Looks like you will need to take a look at VMware
Workstation rather than VPC 2007/VM Server.

Better yet, try Suns VirtualBox. Its free, and as easy to use as VPC2007,
AND its supports USB!

Virtual Box is an option but being open source it is always a 'work in
progress.' The current version is 2.0.2 although the last 'stable' build was
1.6.6

The OP will be testing products on this VM and judging by the signature he
is in the Journalist/Publishing profession. I too am a Journalist and I
wouldn't be reviewing products on software that was a 'work in progress' no
more than I would review software based on beta software regardless of
whether the work in progress application fitted the testing bill.
