So what makes the Comodo Firewall "neater" (better?) than the Windows
in-build version? And what were your test criteria?

ok I wanted to test it since so many people think it is wonderful
So I put it on my test computer running xp pro spk 2, with AVG 8.0 with
antispyware to see how it did. it works fine along side avg 8.0
This is a 40gig hd, pentium 4 1.6ghz, 512mgs of ram
First 3.0 is more technical and a bit hard to understand unless you know
about configuring a firewall to begin with.
I would not recommend it to average or beginner user, unless someone else
congfigured it for them.
I am told their version 2 is easier to understand but why would you install
an older version anyway?
There are usually improvements in the newer version
I installed it with the defense+ because i had not a clue what it was and
they recommended to install it
It is a great tool but it slows down some computers and did mine, so i went
into the program and disabled it by unchecking the function. Found the
computer to load and work faster after this.
Understand mine is an older computer, I do not know if it would work faster
on a pentium D or pentium dual core
It sometimes takes a bit to get it to "remember" programs but basically they
all do this.
It also takes a bit to get it to work with a network but you really need to
know about networking, ip addresses and a firewall in general to get this to
work.
Took me about a half hour to finally get it to see my network and I am quite
good at networking.
The pro version is completly free and it is a full pro version of a firewall
program
I am using AVG 8.0 +firewall now on another computerand it is definetely a
full version program but then again it is much harder to figure out than
AVG's firewall is and of course windows xp firewall.
If you are using Vista's firewall that I feel is more than enough because it
does monitor the in's and outs'
If you are on xp and are basically only using the computer to surf and check
email you really only need xp firewall too.
If you are doing programs like Quicken, Turbo Tax or using Word or Excel
files with important info on them then you need a third party firewall to
monitor the "outs". All of them do monitor the "ins" but 3rd party ones do
the "outs and the "ins" and can give you more info.

I also read somewhere it has a problem with Vista and sp1 but i believe if
you go to their website and their forum there is a patch for this.

My suggestion is to back up your files and try it out and see for yourself.
Just remember if you are running another firewall you will need to uninstall
it first before putting this on.

oh on another note
I aquired a computer from a client of mine who just purchased a new one
This is a celeron HP (was running xp home) 1.8mhz, 40gig hd, 386 megs (i
tried to add memory but it bulked and believe me i tried a bunch of
different ones- it uses pc133's which I have lots of but whatever I put in
and I tried to get it to 512- it did not like any of the memory but what it
has now.
I just got a copy of Freespire OS and decided to put it on, they really do
not recommend it for less than a pentium 111 but if it did not work i was
going to take this computer apart anyway for its parts.
Well it worked.
took 20min to format the HD and put the OS (xp normally takes about an hour
and a half on a 40gig hd) on it.
After a reboot it actually worked. Sure it is a bit slow but it works.
(Imagine what it would do on a faster computer?) I do not have one yet to
put it on but when I do I will put it on there too.
I wanted to see what the Linex Freespire (the OS is totally free and you do
not need a liscense for it) was all about since it is suppose to "mock"
windows xp
I will tell you it is interesting.
the desktop resembles XP but you really need to know someting about linex to
understand it.
I know about about linex because i was raised on DOS.
It uses Firefox and thunderbird as its mail and internet clients
and Open Office 2.0 for the Office Suite
I am still trying to figure out the rest.
I actually got a printer hooked up to it but i am perplexed why i cannot get
it to see my network, I guess I have to play with it some more. It has a
special program similar to Network Neighborhood called Samba and I have all
the configurations correct but I was too tired last night to fiddle with it
more to try to figure out why i cannot get it to work.
There are forums for Freespire so i guess i will pop in there and ask if I
cannot figure it out.
It also has a built in firewall program
You do not need antivirus or antispyware programs- that is a plus.
and on such a slow moving computer it is quite fast.
