Common Dialog Box Default View

Until recently, when I tried to save a document or image -- say, a pdf file
on the Internet -- a common dialog box would open arranged alphabetically by
name and in list view. Now, when I attempt to save such a file, it opens in
thumbnail view, arranged by date modified and in descending order. I hate
this. :)

How can I change it back to the original view? Is it a registry setting,
and if so how do I restore the default? Is it a group policy edit? If so,
which one?

I have already tried resetting all of the folders in Windows Explorer to
their original default settings. This didn't work.

Thanks

This appears to be what you need:

85. Set Detail View for all Folders Open/Save As

Joe, thanks. I had found that link when trying to research this problem on
my own. I was hoping for a "native windows" solution rather than third party
software. It has got to be a registry key or group policy setting that has
gone out of whack, but I haven't yet ascertained which one.

Thanks

One registry location is discussed here, but I could only find the view
preference folder for Word, not other programs:

It is my understanding that Microsoft Office uses a different common dialog
box from the rest of Windows XP. My Office boxes are working correctly.
It's the XP Common Dialog Box that is out of whack.

FYI, I have now solved the mystery. Open a common dialog box, change the
view to the one you want, and then hit CTL-Cancel. Yes, it's
counterintuitive. But this solution is in Ed Bott's book Windows XP Inside
and Out and it works.

Thanks for reporting back.. I've added that one to my list of articles
to remember.
