This comic strip grabber was mentioned a couple of years ago (google
acf archive). It has been updated several times since the problems
some encountered then.

I don't dare install this. I have no willpower where comics are
concerned so the only solution for me is none.

The site also has a simple file rename tool and links to a webring of
file rename tools.

Comics - for Windows and BeOS

http://www.evan.org/Software.html

Freeware, open source (two programs).
(Site extract)
This program creates a web page that has daily comic strips on it.
That way you can read the day's strips without having to go to all
sorts of different sites. Just run this, and it will launch a browser
with all the strips you want in it.

Enjoy,
BillR

Thanks, Bill. Since I was the one who got Aguydude excited about it
back then, only to have it crash for him, I guess I should report.
Under WinXP home, the current version is working fine for me. (Heh,
that's what I said back in 2001 as well. ;)

I'm not sure whether to say "you're welcome" or "thanks" or "you
stinker". Probably all three in reverse order. I daren't use it, but
I think my nieces and nephews will enjoy it.

This sounds really neat (http://www.evan.org/Software/Comics.html),
but in principle, isn't something like this invasive or anything? In
other words, need we be concerned about it phoning home or whatever?

Thanks.

It does phone home to check for updates, since the locations of the
strips sometimes change. I'm not concerned enough about it to sniff
packets. The source code is also available if anyone would like to
take a look. <http://www.evan.org/Software/comicsrc.zip>

Ah, then I don't know. I guess it's a quesition of what more
experienced people say. I don't like things phoning home each time
and would prefer to manually change or update myself. Hmmm, will have
to think about this one for a bit.

AFAICT, the only way to stop it is to block it with a firewall.
Apparently the updates are only text files, and I guess it would be
easy enough for him to make the autoupdating optional and provide users
with a link for manual downloads. His e-mail address is on his
website, and he encourages suggestions.
