I have comcast broadband. For three months, I didn't have a problem with
using my router a (Microsoft MN 700.) When I got home today, my internet
connection was not detected. It said something like inactive or limited
connection. Why, all of a sudden, would this happen? What should I do? I
only have one computer hooked up to the router, but I would like to network
an older computer to the router in the future. My internet works fine
without the router. I even manually set up the internet connection with the
router in place, using the same exact DNS and IP addrees, subnet mask, etc.
to no avail.

Please help!

Find the small reset button on the router, and using a pen or paperclip to
reach it, hold it in for about 8 seconds to reset the router.

I wouldn't reset the router. Resetting the router returns all of its
settings to factory defaults and loses any settings that the owner has
made. It might not work correctly after that.

Instead, I'd disable and then enable the computer's network connection
and see if the problem is fixed. If it isn't fixed, I'd unplug the
router, wait a few seconds, and plug it back in.

If you move the cable modem between the router and the computer, be
sure to reset the cable modem by unplugging it, waiting a few seconds,
and plugging it back in.

I had this same problem with comcast a while back. Turn off and unplug
everything. Now, plug in (in this order) your cable modem, and wait for it
to complete, next your router, and wait for it to complete, and then your
computer. If you are using a wireless connection, you have probably just
had a neighbor install a wireless router that is conflicting with your own,
check your settings.

Steve,

I tried disabling and enabling it, to no avail. I have also tried the reset
button, and the power down/up proceedure, all to no avail. What could I try
next?

Sounds like it's time for replacement...

BW,
Comcast has recently upgraded service in some areas from 3.0Mbps to 4.0Mbps.
You should following the instructions below, also you should check your
modems manufacturer's website and see if there are any firmware upgrades for
your unit.

From recent Newsletter sent by them:

To take advantage of the speed increase, simply unplug your modem, wait 60
seconds and plug your modem back in again. (Click here for further
instructions
