You really need more RAM. I wouldn't settle for less than 512Mb. I'd even go
for 1Ghz since it' so cheap these days. Your video card needs upgrading too.
Look for at least a 128Mb card and stay away from the MX cards.

You have a nice fast CPU, however it bottle necks at the video card and RAM.
For around $300 you should be able to upgrade the RAM and video card,
noticing an improvement in framerates and startup/shutdown speeds.

Here's some prices I found on the web for video cards (all of these are good
cards, however you get what you pay for).

NVidia fx 5200 128mb= $75
NVidia fx 5600 128mb=$150
NVidia fx 5800 128mb=$269
NVidia fx 5900 128mb=$291
NVidia fx 5600 256mb=$169
NVidia fx 5900 256mb=$420

Ati 9200 128mb=$59
Ati 9600pro 256mb=$160
Ati 9700np 128mb=$215
Ati 9800pro 128mb=279
Ati 9800XT 256mb=$495

*Thanks to the DVD-man for these prices.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the quick answer.Really appreciated!

What baffles me though is the fact that the memory is not released when the game is
"on hold" ie between campaign missions: nothing is happening (gamewise) and
theoretically the garbage collector should take care of everything until the action resumes,
here I have to do it myself by exit and relaunching the game every 3-4 missions

Throwing more memory wouldn't it just delay the problem?

While I agree 256 MB of RAM is on the low end for good performance, there
could be other issues involved. Several things should be looked at here,
including the amount of free space you have on your hard drive, whether
you're running your anti-virus software while playing the game, and other
programs running in the background.

The issue of RAM becomes paramount, if you're attempting to run other
programs in the background. Take a look at this Knowledge Base article:

article might help you improve game performance:
