COM1 Problem

Running XP I can get my Com1 to work correctly with a couple of programs
(ActiveHome and MS ActiveSync) the very first time I boot up "AFTER" I
uninstall the Com1 port from within the device manager. HOWEVER, after I
reboot any subsequent times, the applications say I have a "invalid com port"
and the devices will not communicate with the system. If I again uninstall
the com1 port and do a reboot, I'm okay until the very next reboot, whereby
it again fails.

Appears to me that something is "stealing the Com1 port during a bootup.
The problem is NOT present if I use Com2, however, I need to use both ports.

I have tried going into MSCONFIG and turned off everything in the start menu
and also the "mail" in the WININI Tab, all to no avail. I have also tried
many times to uninstall and reinstall the 2 applications described above
again to no avail.

In all these senarios, when I go to the device manager, it claims the port
IS working correctly.

Any suggestions or where to seek some help?

XP as with all other NT based Windows seems to always check to see if the
first COMM port (COM1) has a serial mouse. Unfortunately, there does not seem
to be a setting within Windows XP to tell XP not to use serial mice. However
all is not lost for there is supposed to be a BOOT.INI parameter to tell XP to
ignore serial mice and on which COMM port(s):

/NOSERIALMICE=[COMx | COMx,y,z...] - Disables serial mouse detection of the
specified COM port(s). Use this switch if you have a component other than a
mouse attached to a serial port during the startup sequence. If you use
/NOSERIALMICE without specifying a COM port, serial mouse detection is
disabled on all COM ports.

Thanks Yves. I have already tried this without success, however, I may not
have entered the boot.ini line correctly. Is the bracket around the com1
syntax required?
Also, what is the correct method of editing the boot.ini?
Thanks

/Fastdetect is for this purpose, please see

Boot.ini files

I suspect the OP has a modem taking the com port at boot time tho, and
then XP is seeing it taken and won't assign it again. Suggest removing
all instances in device manager, remove modem, boot up, install
software, then install modem.
