COM1 missing from Device Manager after upgrade

Hello --

I have just upgraded from NT4 to 2000. I have two serial ports installed on
the motherboard. In the BIOS these are shown as COM1 (3E8, IRQ4) and COM2
(2F8, IRQ3). However, the Control Panel\Hardware\Device Manager\Ports shows
only Communications Port COM2 (2F8) and Communications Port COM3 (3E8), but
no COM1. Is COM3 really serial port 1 but with another name? If not, what
happened to COM1? What happens if I need to install a device that
specifically requires COM1?

Note: during installation of 2000, the Device Manager showed 4 serial ports,
2 COM1 and 2 COM2 ports. These were all shown as not working and a serial
mouse wouldn't work with either of the actual serial ports. Therefore, I
uninstalled each of these COM ports in Device Manager and then rebooted, at
which point COM2 and COM3 were displayed and worked OK with the mouse.

Thanks,
Don Culp

Why do you think a BIOS flash upgrade will help, since the motherboard
already reports COM1 and COM2 as available? What would make 2000 register
these as COM2 and COM3?

You may need to flash upgrade the mother board bios.

No idea really at this point other than hardware issues such as this are
usually compatibility issues. May be that the bios requires an upgrade for
compatibility reasons with the newer OS. Check with the pc or mb
manufacturer on this.
