Column: How to Listen to Digital Music in Your Car

I have a specific question about getting purchased music onto my IPAQ so I
can then play it in my car.

Using Windows Media Player I can transfer music to my IPAQ SD card but
purchased music will not play on the IPAQ due to digital rights issues. If I
copy the music elsewhere on my device the music plays fine, but I don't have
enough capacity for the amount of music I want to carry.

I have emailed Microsoft and two online music stores about this problem and
have not so much as gotten a response.

Any assistance would be appreciated ... I will not purchase any more digital
music until I have a resolution. I never leave home without my IPAQ!

Thanks!

You've run into one of the challenges of digital audio--the fact that not
every device currently supports playing music purchased online. I wish I
could point you to a patch to install to allow you to play the purchased
music on your iPaq, but it's not currently possible.

Many devices do support playing purchased music. Microsoft's PlaysForSure
logo is intended to make it easier to find these devices:

The best advice I can offer is to make sure that the player you're using
supports the audio format that you're purchasing. If you're purchasing music
in WMA format, look for players that advertise "Secure WMA" or "WMA-DRM"
support (DRM stands for Digital Rights Management). Some of the devices that
support these formats currently on the shelves won't have the PlaysForSure
logo, because the logo is very new.

Tony,
I don't see it as a compatibility issue. DRM music will play fine if it is
copied to the internal drive on my IPAQ, I just cannot synchronize music to
the SD card. It is ridiculous that Microsoft has developed a portable music
technology and made it incompatible with their high end portable computing
solution.

I'm sorry, I misunderstood the issue. I'm not aware of any aspect of the DRM
technology that would not allow you to play protected music from an SD card,
but this is not my area of expertise. You would have better luck in a
newsgroup specific to your iPaq.

I can't get any thing to play in my jeep grand cherokee. I burn a cd, it
works on my sterio in the house but not in my jeep. I have the factory stereo
with the infinity upgrade. What might be my problem?

The hifi unit in your jeep might not be compatible with CD-R's (or CD-RW's).
Check the docs that came with it.

im trying to find out the best format to store files on my iRiver so that i
can play them on my car stereo. i am using a belkin FM transmitter and notice
that some tracks sound really bad. i typically try and rip cd's to my
computer at the best possible bitrate 192,205 or 320 but the FM signal is
only transmtting at 96kbits so would i be better of ripping the tracks at 96k
so there's no signal dropout when listening in the car.
also it seems that wma is a better format than mp3 - is this true.

thanks
