Colors won't apply to slides

In powerpoint(And even Excel), if I choose a Slide Design that has a colored
background, when I try to apply it to the actual slide, the colors won't
show. The colors show in the slide template to the right, but the colors
never show on the actual slide.

Any ideas?

They don't show in slide show.

In the end, the user had a desktop setting that was set to allow High
contrast or something, and once we unchecked or reversed that setting, all
was well
