Color Profiles

I bought a new Dell LED monitor several days ago. A friend told me that
I should probably adjust the color. He didn't say how, but I did find a
MS site that has a lot of words about color adjustment. There's an
implication that the color can be set optimally, but no button on the
site that I can presently see that will do it. It has the standard
monitor buttons to adjust color/contras and a few multimedia whatever.

Your video software / drivers do that.
Right click on your desk top and open the vid settings and see.

Monitor calibration can be tricky. A lot depends on how far you
want to go; If you want to ensure you see the same colours on
screen, printer and from a scanner, it takes a lot of effort.
Here's a good page to learn about some of that, together with
calibration images to help.

Some do, some don't. :)

It's not critical to me, but thanks for the link. I'll take a look.

Just to chime in, Rob's reply is right on the money, IMO. Many years
ago, Corel Draw 4 actually provided you with a photograph to use for
color calibration.
