Washed Out Colors

Windows XP, Standard Dell Dimension Desktop...

Two days ago I changed my desktop wallpaper and "mildly" adjusted
colors/themes (tweaks).

Things were fine for 48 hours, now colors are very washed out, font
color changed to purple and barely readable against grey background.

Any troubleshoot//correct//restore default suggestions would be greatly
appreciated

To rule out trouble with the hardware (video card and/or monitor), set
the theme back to the default Windows XP. Do things look good now?

Thanks for response. I will keep your suggested "check" on file but as
often happens when I booted up today--9 hours after my frantic inquiry
here--everything had "magically" returned to normal.
