Colletions and Projects - Difference

I think I have been making a mistake. Once clips are captured and displayed
in collections, I then move them to the timeline in groups, then I save the
timel;ine as a project. I do this because I do not know of a way to save
groups of clips directly from collections.

Now I realize that once my clips have been saved as a Project then I can't
"cut" a section of a clip because I can't get the clip back into collections
so can cut it in the preview window.

Is the only way to cut is by having the clip displayed in the preview window?
