CMD and RS232 problem

I have a problem on two computers. I had hyperterminal
running on COM1, I then closed the hyperterminal session,
went into the CMD window and did a "COPY filename COM1".

This sent data to the serial port as expected. Now when I
go back into hyperterminal and attempt to open COM 1 I get
the following er"ror:

Unable to open COM1. Please check your port settings."

I have reset the computer, I have turned it off and, I
have removed COM1 from Device Manager and re-installed it.
Nothing works.

This has happen on two different computers. Has anyone
seen this problem, what Port Settings can be changed, and
how can I bounce back between Window's Hyperterminal and
CMD prompt?
