| Of course I ran the "disc clean up" - I use it all the time. But thanks
| for the reminder.
|
| I just visited the CCleaner site. It's very impressive. I think I
| downloaded some of the other services there recently. They run very
| fast and found at least 500 "Severe errors" but will only fix ten
| unless you pay $37.95. This sort of thing always makes me wonder why
| Microsoft doesn't include such tools with the operating system. These
| are common sense maintenance issues.
|
| Perhaps my original post was unclear. I know I failed to delete
| completely files and folders from old applications. What I don't know
| is how much of the stuff on my hard drive is legit and how much is just
| wasting space. My primitive PC has only a 20G hard drive. Eight or so
| years ago I couldn't imagine filling that much space, but in the past
| couple of weeks I went from about 75% full to roughly 98% full.
|
| I can't SEE where the space gobblers are. I don't know how to identify
| things I need and things that just sit there fouling up my PC.
|
| I'm very greatful for the suggestions you made. Clearly I know just
| enough about the PC to do harm. Well, I can tweak some things but I get
| frustrated with others.
You'll have to do this the hard way, look in your "programs folder" for
applications that you're deleted. Examine the folders and only remove those that
you are 100% sure of.
Also you can remove old windows updates -
Folders that have uninstall as part of the name (for example
$NtUninstallKB282010$ which reside in C:\windows (hidden folders) are Window Hot
Fix Update folders/files) can be safely deleted (providing you never wish to
uninstall the updates). I would recommend leaving these folders for a period of
at least a month to make sure the update is working correctly.
These updates can be deleted individually or in multiples. To find out more
about the update/s go to:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=XXXXXX
NB: XXXXXX = the actual number not including the "Q" or "KB"
Once you have deleted the uninstall folders/files, then go to Control Panel,
Add/Remove Programs. Select the matching Windows Hotfix Title relating the
update folder/file you have just deleted and select remove. You will get a
Windows error. This is because you have deleted the uninstall folder/files. Just
choose OK and the entry will be deleted from the Add/Remove Programs Listing.
