Clutter on Windows XP forgotten files, junk, etc.?

M

Michael

My hard drive is virtually full. I am certain much of the space is
wasted by junk I failed to remove completely or no longer use. I
wouldn't be surprised if there is also a lot of garbage not removed by
numerous anti-virus, anti-spyware helpers. The folders and files are
so utterly cryptic I don't know the needed from the garbage.

Help!

Of course I ran the "disc clean up" - I use it all the time. But thanks
for the reminder.

I just visited the CCleaner site. It's very impressive. I think I
downloaded some of the other services there recently. They run very
fast and found at least 500 "Severe errors" but will only fix ten
unless you pay $37.95. This sort of thing always makes me wonder why
Microsoft doesn't include such tools with the operating system. These
are common sense maintenance issues.

Perhaps my original post was unclear. I know I failed to delete
completely files and folders from old applications. What I don't know
is how much of the stuff on my hard drive is legit and how much is just
wasting space. My primitive PC has only a 20G hard drive. Eight or so
years ago I couldn't imagine filling that much space, but in the past
couple of weeks I went from about 75% full to roughly 98% full.

I can't SEE where the space gobblers are. I don't know how to identify
things I need and things that just sit there fouling up my PC.

I'm very greatful for the suggestions you made. Clearly I know just
enough about the PC to do harm. Well, I can tweak some things but I get
frustrated with others.

You'll have to do this the hard way, look in your "programs folder" for
applications that you're deleted. Examine the folders and only remove those that
you are 100% sure of.

Also you can remove old windows updates -

Folders that have uninstall as part of the name (for example
$NtUninstallKB282010$ which reside in C:\windows (hidden folders) are Window Hot
Fix Update folders/files) can be safely deleted (providing you never wish to
uninstall the updates). I would recommend leaving these folders for a period of
at least a month to make sure the update is working correctly.

These updates can be deleted individually or in multiples. To find out more
about the update/s go to:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=XXXXXX
NB: XXXXXX = the actual number not including the "Q" or "KB"

Once you have deleted the uninstall folders/files, then go to Control Panel,
Add/Remove Programs. Select the matching Windows Hotfix Title relating the
update folder/file you have just deleted and select remove. You will get a
Windows error. This is because you have deleted the uninstall folder/files. Just
choose OK and the entry will be deleted from the Add/Remove Programs Listing.

That comment right there screams of issues... If I follow you correctly,
when you don't want something any more, you just "delete" the folders &
files? BAD! If you aren't "uninstalling" as you should, it's probably too
late for you already...

I'd definitely recommend learning the proper method to remove items that you
no longer want, and then back-up any important files and start your system
from scratch (provided you just delete instead of uninstall)...
