When I attempt to close Windows XP Pro it will only keep
restarting. The only way I have found to close is to keep
my finger on the power button on the CPU and depress it
as soon as the monitor screen goes blank. Other wise it
just keeps restarting.

Also when starting up the window to click on my name does
not appear but starts with the Windows welcome screen.

These two things occured after downloading and
installing several updates at one time after formating my
C drive and reinstalling Windows XP Pro OEM version. My
Windows XP Pro OEM CD does not show a REPAIR my XP
installation as a choice.

I ordered all the parts to build my computer from
newegg.com and they had a special offer of a OEM veresion
2002 of Windows XP Pro for ordering all the parts to
build a complete computer.

Can I just use my CD to reinstall Windows XP Pro on top
of the present installation without causing any more
problems?.

No need to take such a drastic step. Wait for more junk to accumulate before
you go to that bother of reinstalling XP. How about doing a System Restore?
All it does is change your software configuration to whatever it was as of a
given date (restore point). It is as if the Update never happened. I know
from experience, as I was the 12,639,806th person to have this happen, and
you are the 12,743,740th. System Restore will not change your data files or
settings. Any software added after the restore point will have to be
reinstalled.
--> Just type "system restore" into Help and Support.

PS: Do not allow Automatic Updates to install without your review! You do
not need the vast majority of them. All you need is critical/security
updates and the rare update which pertains specifically to your situation.

Hi Howard,

You should be able to re-use the XP CD you had bought with your product key
to re-install windows XP on your machine. but i don't think that's
necessary unless you want to re-format and re-do your machine clean from
scratch. this would be a good thing to do if you don't want all the
programs that come with an OEM version, and if you want to make sure your
system is as clean as possible.. this is also a good idea if you're having
problems with some applications on your system that are causing you
headaches.

BUT before you re-format your machine, please make sure you back up all your
important data!

If non of the above applies to you, then you can probably fix your problem
by doing this:

- For the login part, for your system to show you the screen where you
choose your login name:
1. go to start --> control panel --> User Accounts. Then click on ""
2. Click on "Chane the way users log on and off". in this view, make sure
you have both the "Use welcome screen" and the "Use Fast User Switching"
checked.

you may also want to make more accounts for other people in your household

- for the restart problem, what button are you pressing to shutdown? if you
press re-start it won't shut off for you.

hope that helps!
