closing programs before shut-down

lois

have just upgraded from ME to XP Home, and finding many
differences...
on shut-down, pop-up says closing down programs, then next
one says shutting-down, then blue screen with pointer,
then shuts down....
my question is, what programs is it shutting down, i
thought i had closed everything... that is of course
without exiting Windows Messenger, because i R-click in
quick launch and this darn thing won't let me, it says it
is being used?????

What else is shutting down?

- Antivirus software
- Firewall
- Device drivers
- Miscellaneous services

Just to name a few. Keep in mind that in order to shut down, all run
processes must go through a terminate routine. A failure of a system to
shutdown properly is usually caused by a failure of a process to terminate
properly.

Nothing wrong with a little bit of paranoia, some users could use a jolt of
it - might keep them from infecting themselves and everyone around them.

Lois, it never hurts to ask questions, and it's certainly better than
turning a blind eye to it. Keep an eye on the system, it's when something
changes or suddenly appears that you want to start asking "Why did that
happen?".

Do you actually USE WM? If not, you can pretty easily disable the
little stinker.
