closing network connection when logged off

Is there a way to leave network connections open when logged off? For
example, to schedule a backup job late at night to a mapped LAN
directory, and still be able to log off at the end of the day.

TIA :)

I hope no one minds if I bump this thread back into consideration ...

I have one XP computer that does not close its connection when logged
off, but it is sharing a directory. However, my ofc computer shares no
storage and insists on closing the network connection when logged off.
Do I have to share local storage before XP will not close a connection
when logged off?

:)
