I have a good WinXP setup on home computer/network; would like to "clone"
environment to new XP installation on laptop. What would be the best way?

There is no "best way" because you can't do this unless both computers
have exactly the same (or almost the same) hardware. I read your post
as saying you have a desktop and a laptop. The XP desktop installation
- which you could image with third-party software like Ghost,
TrueImage, or BootIT NG - will fail on the laptop because the hardware
will be so different.

If you are trying to do something else, then please post back with more
details.

Would the "file&settings transfer wizard" not be able to do this ??or does
it transfer drivers as well??

You may be right, but since I really don't know what the OP is trying to
do, I'm not going to guess. If he comes back and tells us, then we can
take it from there.

I wondered about File and Settings Transfer Wizard... all I want to do is
make the laptop setup similar to the home setup with desktop settings,
customizations etc. I suppose any software installed on the home system would
have to be re-installed on the laptop? Maybe I could copy the home computer
boot partition to the laptop and run XP setup repair to get around the
hardware issues? Has anyone done this before? How could I synchronize these
two systems later?... I hope I am being more clear on this issue.

You would need to install any programs you wanted on the laptop. I would
not image a desktop to a laptop. Laptops have proprietary hardware and
software. Certainly you could try this, but be prepared for it not to
work. However, if you image the laptop first and save that image (or
have a factory restore disk), why not try? You'll always be able to
restore the laptop to factory condition.

Here are links about the File & Transfer Wizard so you can see if it
will do what you want. Again, since the laptop is new as long as you
have an image, why not try it?

If you decide to experiment, let us know the results. It would be
interesting.

I set up 2 computers over the last few months....90% of the installed
programs were the same.
When I finished setting up all of the usual display setting/desktop/shortcut
folders...I did use the Wizard to transfer those settings to the other
system......and then deleted the shortcuts that did not work .I had the same
programs on the same HD on both systems as well as the same user name and
password....as an example I had money on the D drive on both systems.
hope this helps

Peter...did you run duplicate installations of apps on both computers before
using the FASTW?

I installed 2 versions of XP.....one home one OEM
I then installed all of the MObo drivers
then installed all of the programs/apps onto their respective HD...making
sure that the HD were the same
Then I fixed up one computer and started on the other when I thought of the
Wiz.
So I ran the wizard to a DVD..........inserted into other system and
voila....with a few none working shortcuts.

I will try this... it's not a CRITICAL issue but would be nice to have as
close a match as possible, and a few missing shortcuts is of no consequence.
Thanks all for your input.
