Clogged C86 - Warranty - Ink Strategy ?

B

Bob

Need opinions form everyone except the m-troll:

.... bought a C86. Newbie that I am, I did not use it enough and it
clogged after about 8 months of minimal use on the original
cartridges. Poor black, irregular Cyan, no Magenta at all (got worse
and worse while cleaning). I know better now. Live and learn. It's
still under warranty. After multiple cleaning cycles and time on the
phone with Epson, they told me to try new cartridges and if that does
not help, call them back for an RMA.

What are the opinions on whether new cartridges are going to help? Any
chance ? Should I just call them back, tell them I tried new
cartridges with no improvement, and get a new unit? I have a
replacement cartridge system that I was gong to install and I hate to
spend $60 on overpriced Epson cartridges just to find out they do not
make any difference ... and blow off a lot of $60 ink in the process.
OTOH, I wonder how much testing they will do before honoring my
warranty... do I really need to test this out before returning it to
them ?

Opinions and experience appreciated,

?

Just tell them that you had already bought another set of cartridges
and used it for cleaning.

They will do almost no testing but it doesn't matter anyway since the head has
failed during warranty. Replacing the cartridges if they are not empty is
almost pointless. I think they are clutching at straws. I suggest that you
insist on your warranty rights, you can tell them you tried new cartrdiges if
you need to but I don't think they should have asked you to do that for what is
obviously a printhead problem. BTW I know of no instruction or advice that the
manufacturer provides that says you should print regularly, most of us learn
that the hard way.

Tru giving Arthur (Art) Entlich a email requesting his cleanin
instructions, which he will send free of charge, problem is
understand he is having trouble with his emial address

You will see his post up and down these pages, his e-mail is-

remove the brackets leaving no spaces, according to Art this is t
avoid spam

The only solution I think is to get a cleaning cartridge, give
couple of flushes and leave in situ overnight, giving another coupl
of flushes the next day then with new ink cartridges give a coupl
more flushes and then try again. If this don't help then looks lik
the head will want replacing

As mentioned if under warranty better let them see to it, make sur
you send them original tanks, even if you used 3rd party ink - jus
incase they get a little 'snooty'

My C62 was always clogging and with Epson ink, I've now use a Cano
and my clogging troubles are over, not even used a manual nozzl
clean yet since I got the printer last June/July. I had to have th
Epson printer replaced just after 6 or 8 months use, the replacemen
went the same way, the replacement came in a plain box minus in
tanks and may have been a reberished unit

The printer is under warranty, Epson will replace it a no cost.
Why should he get his hands full of ink?

Yes, I found that to be true. I checked the manual closely because I
was concerned. Nothing about printing regularly, cleaning regularly,
etc.

Thanks,

In my experience, new cartridges do not necessarly lead to clear heads.
Further, the cartridges in your printer are only 8 months old and
should still be OK. Also, running cleaning cycles on heads that are
clogged with chipped cartridges means loss of ink due to improper
programming of the cartridge due to the attempted cleaning.. I agree
with you, why throw another $60 on new ink into it. They might even
replace it with a different printer that the cartridges you bought don't
fit into.

Because his printer is still under warranty, I usually recommend against
doing your own attempt at cleaning. It's not that its all that
difficult or dangerous, but Epson may point fingers if they notice
something that shows the printer has been worked on. Usually, during
the manufacturing run of a model, small improvements are made, and since
it is likely they will send you a refurbished model (or a newer model)
that may sometimes mean an improved product.

I agree, and I stated so... of course, I did it as a top post, so not
sure you will have seen it ;-)
