Clicking Links Freezes Programs

Greetings Gurus All!
Machine: Sony Vaio Pentium 4
System: Home Edition XP and then installed Professional Upgrade attempting
to fix
Problem: On nearly all programs which show clickable links it will create
"Not Responding message" requiring to run Task Manager to close it"
This extremely interruptive for my work flow. Even here in newsgroup, it
will freeze News Server.
I have run the gamut of troubleshooting and repair advice and are out of
ideas what to do about this.
Clue? When shutting down, message Window related to Rundll32 shows up with
message " Ending Program .. if ended now may cause loss of data" which never
happened. Either choice will close down normally. I noticed from a search
"rundll32.exe" that there are listings of rundll32 in a "prefetch folder" .
One for each occurance of freezing a program.

Pleeeaaaase, before I pull out remaining hair, any advise?
