I think most will say they are on their way to the big hard disk in
the sky but I did this. My brand new 200 gig HD --- my PC was wonky
when I formatted had a bad stick of mem that kep screwing WIN XP up t
and that led to HD troubles from the start after formatting. After
about a month it wouldnt boot up and started clicking all the time.
I downloaded WD utils and did a low level format and formatted it
again after I took the stick out of course and I havent had any
problem since then for the last 3 months. This is a really YMMV one so
I have idea if it will fix your HD at all. If your disks are really
old for instance they are probably ready for replacement.
Generally speaking, no. They couldn't be considered
reliable anymore even if there were some way to get them
working, only a measure to attempt DIY data recovery.
Some try putting the wrapped/sealed drive in the freezer for
a few hours then immediately try to copy off, salvage data,
but that's a last ditch attempt before scrapping it or
RMA'ing it. If you need and are willing to pay for a data
recovery service, don't do anything more to/with the drives,
disconnect them.
They dont have any vaulable data on them. I think one is screwed do to
physical shock (there are marks on it) and the other two started clicking
within a month of each other. While working fine for weeks, just started
clicking one day
once a HD starts making a clicking sound and any time... In my experience
thats the short term count-down to HD failure so back-up whatever you can
asap.
