Cleartype - ???

I have Cleartype enabled in Display Properties. But when I go to My
Computer > Properties > Advanced > Performance > Settings, the box for
"smooth edges of screen fonts" is not checked. ???

Thanks!

not just check it and press ok.

Sorry, just wondering why it wouldn't automatically be checked when I
enable Cleartype. Otherwise, what is Cleartype doing?

Just by chance, did your fail to click the Apply button. I'm always guilty
of doing that myself:)

You have to select ClearType, then check the box, then press OK. Next you
select Apply in the Display Properties window, then OK.

That's how I got ClearType to work on my new computer, which I just received
less than one week ago.

I found that the ClearType works fine within the XP system and with many of
the programs, BUT there are some programs where the font looks bitmapped.
This annoys me, especially in files as grand as in the Adobe products
(Photoshop, Golive).

If anyone knows about programs to help correct this problem across the
entire XP system as well as help in all programs, I would be most interested
in finding out.

I hope this helps.

Yep, did that. But it still doesn't put a check in the Smooth Edges
box in MyComputer > Properties > Advanced > Performance > Settings.

Is this something different, that should be checked manually when
Cleartype is enabled?

Incidentally, not sure you have to click Apply - just clicking OK
appears to do it. I think Apply is used for temporary changes, to see
how it looks before clicking OK and making it permanent. But I could
be wrong about this...

No problem. Cleartype and smooth edges are two different features. If you
want to see the difference cleartype makes, uncheck it [and apply].

From my own experience, I've never found any difference in 'smooth edges of
....'. I'm sure it has some effect, I've just never seen it or cant' tell
the difference.

The best way I've found of enabling Cleartype is to go to this Microsoft page:

http://www.microsoft.com/typography/cleartype/cleartypeactivate.htm

It permits selection of the degree of Cleartype used as well as turning it on.
