Clearing search box

I use Firefox (and sometimes, Internet Explorer).

When I start typing a word in a search box, a list of words that begin
with the character(s) that I've typed is displayed. How can I prevent
these "suggested" words from appearing?
 
In Firefox goto Tools - Options -Privacy Tab and uncheck Remember what I
entered in forms and search bar

In IE goto Tools - Internet Options - Content Tab - AutoComplete Settings
and uncheck forms
