Clear Type - All Applications

P

Pod

My old Trinitron just died so I bought an LCD screen.

I enabled Clear Type and used the tweaker to improve the fonts, which is all
good, in the applications which utilise it.

However, I have found a lot of apps I use do not seem to render fonts in
Clear Type and display the same whether CT is enabled or not. The fonts
appear as if CT is disabled, ie kind of fractured.

I know that CT is a global setting so why are some apps unable to utilise
it?

Is there a tweak that will force all windows to use CT?

Thanks

Hi Pod

I haven't come across this before. Which programs don't seem to be using
ClearType?

I am surprised you say you haven't come across this before as many
applications won't use antialiased fonts and/or ClearType under Vista. It
depends on the programming language and component libraries used for
development. For example, any Java application written using Swing will not
use ClearType even though Java 6 introduced sub-pixel antialiasing. I have
seen Delphi and some older C++ applications with the same problem and I
believe it is even possible to write a "modern" C# or C++ application such
that ClearType won't be used if not coded correctly.

There's nothing that can be done about it at the OS level.

Thanks for the information, Q. Personally I haven't come across this
problem, but if I do I shall now know why :) However, I wanted to know
which programs the OP was having trouble with in case there is some
other cause.
