I used Wipefile from Norton/Symantec on my old W98 computer. What can
I use on XP?

1. I would buy their Systemworks 2006 just to get Wipefile, but their
website does not list which Utilities are included. Does anyone know
if it is?

2. Has anyone tried SafeIT Secure File Shred?

Winxp and win2k has Disk Cleanup
If you are paranoid and looking for a utility to permanently delete unwanted
files there are plenty of free 'shredders'
Symantec home user products seem to impose a high overhead on systems

Windows has Disk Cleanup (free) which you have to configure and you
may not like having to wait for it to compress files.

If you want a no-brainer temp files remover, as well as many other
features, check out The Ultimate Troubleshooter @ answersthatwork.com

On file shredders, I don't use them, but try download.com and I am
sure you'll come up with many.

Try:
http://www.heidi.ie/eraser (Freeware)

All the expensive programs from McAfee, Norton, PGP etc. until now
can't do one important thing:
They can't clean (overwrite) the entries in the $MFT.

Eraser can, assumed that the entries are not crosslinked by mistake.

Danke, herr Meyer.
When I Googled earlier about "Eraser", messages said they no longer
existed, They were wrong. On your advice I ried the above URL, and got
a good download of Version 57.
But first I tried to get Version 58. When I tried to run the
installation .exe, I got an error messages saying "Program too big for
Memory." But 57 looks good. No need to debug 58.

What is $MFT?
