CLEANED UP - - Missing or corrupted DxSetup.exe

I have a Missing or corrupted DxSetup.exe problem...

....and I recall seeing this same error message once, perhaps twice in the 2
or 3 months.

This same DxSetup.exe error message occurred when I was attempting to
install non-essential software programs. And when the (above) error message
window popped up, I chose to terminate the installation and delete the
non-essential software program.

Currently, this DxSetup.exe error message occurs when I try to install
Intel's Network Adapter Drivers 15.4.1 for Windows XP.

Back on 2010 April 29, I successfully installed Intel's Network Adapter
Drivers 15.2 for Windows XP, and did not have any problems - in other words,
I did not experience this DxSetup.exe error message.

My operating system is Windows XP SP3, 32-bit, up to date via Windows
Update, with the exception of Microsoft's Malicious Removal Tools, and
Internet Explorer 7 or 8. I have never allowed Windows Update to install any
Malicious Removal Tool, and because I only use Internet Explorer for Windows
Updates (my primary browser is Firefox 3.6 including its latest version and
updates), I find no value nor interest to upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 or
8.

According to Add or Remove Programs, I have the following Microsoft .NET
Frameworks installed...

1.1 - v1.1.4322

3.5 Service Pack 1

The file dd_dotnetfx3error.txt is empty - and searching for the word "error"

To ensure my Registry is not effected by any new program installation, I
typically back it up prior to the install. However, because I install or
updated software several times each week, once the new or updated program
appears to work as described, I generally delete the Registry backup file.
This may seem severe, but once I install a new program or update, the
previous Registry backup become moot. Moot because it has no value since
restoring it also removes any newer Registry entries, updates, etc.

I am running Windows Installer 4.5 and have not experienced any problems
with it.

I manually update Windows XP by visiting the Windows Update website once a
week, and utilize the CUSTOM option to check for Windows XP updates.

For non-Windows operating system software, I visit other websites like
MajorGeeks and FileHippo. I try to download new software direct from the
author's website(s) whenever possible.

When available, I generally update my DirectX files. Recently, I installed
DirectX June 2010 Redistributable (with filename directx_Jun2010_redist.exe).
As with all previous versions, I extracted this file a temp directory,
F:\DirectX_Install. Once extracted, I executed DXSETUP.EXE to install the
DirectX update. Once complete, I typically leave the Application,
Application Extensions and Cabinet Files, in place until the next DirectX
Redistributable is released - and when it is, I delete all files in
F:\DirectX_Install before executing the new DXSETUP.EXE application file.

While I have executed the DirectX Redistributable DXSETUP.EXE application
file several time in the last 2 to 3 years (concurrent with the respective
DirectX Redistributable release), I have never looked for the DxSetup.exe
file elsewhere on my HDD. Therefore, I have no idea where it is supposed to
be located. I read one (confusing website's) expert suggest that it is
located in the C:\WINDOWS\System32 directory. When I looked, it was not
there - so I copied the latest DXSETUP.EXE file to it. Unfortunately, it did
not correct or resolve the problem - the problem remains.

I am running DirectX 9.0c, and ran the DirectX Diagnostic Tool and no
problems were found.

Note that I removed Computer Name and Page file - their info is irrelevant,
in my opinion.

I do have a DirectX directory, that I believe was created with the initial
install of Windows XP SP2 that came with my Dell. This directory,
C:\WINDOWS\system32\DirectX, is empty of files. However, there is a Dinput
subdirectory, C:\WINDOWS\system32\DirectX\Dinput, that contains 33
Configuration Settings files, and 147 PNG Image files.

Regarding anti-virus programs, I run Avira AntiVir 9.0.0.422 - where I run
Avira AntiVir Guard to protect my system from real-time virus and
adware/malware problems. I manually update the definition files at least
twice daily.

Regarding adware/malware problems, as a redundant program to Avira, I also
have Ad-Aware AE installed - though in a passive mode only. In other words,
Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service is disabled when Ad-Aware AE is not being run -
with its' Real-time Protection off. In addition, the Ad-Watch option is also
disabled. In short, I rely on Avira for adware/malware protection and use
Ad-Aware to manually scan my system one, maybe twice a week.

I do not schedule any software updates, and always disable the automatic
update option or preference.

After running both Avira and Ad-Aware, my system appears to be free of
viruses and adware/malware.

To supplement my investigation, I ran HijackThis and it generated the

....I executed sfc /scannow, but it did not resolve the Missing or corrupted
DxSetup.exe problem. Hopefully, it did not create other problems.

It do not know if it has any relevance, but I recently removed Microsoft
Messenger (entirely) from my system. Having never used it, its' Service was
disabled, and its' option in Outlook Express had been removed, for over 2
years.

Other than reinstalling my operating system, anyone have a solution or
suggestions of how I can resolve this Missing or corrupted DxSetup.exe
problem?

Messenger (entirely) from my system. Having never used it, its' Service was
disabled, and its' option in Outlook Express had been removed, for over 2
years.

Other than reinstalling my operating system, anyone have a solution or
suggestions of how I can resolve this Missing or corrupted DxSetup.exe
problem?

...and I recall seeing this same error message once, perhaps twice in the 2
or 3 months.

This same DxSetup.exe error message occurred when I was attempting to
install non-essential software programs. And when the (above) error message
window popped up, I chose to terminate the installation and delete the
non-essential software program.

Currently, this DxSetup.exe error message occurs when I try to install
Intel's Network Adapter Drivers 15.4.1 for Windows XP.

Back on 2010 April 29, I successfully installed Intel's Network Adapter
Drivers 15.2 for Windows XP, and did not have any problems - in other words,
I did not experience this DxSetup.exe error message.

My operating system is Windows XP SP3, 32-bit, up to date via Windows
Update, with the exception of Microsoft's Malicious Removal Tools, and
Internet Explorer 7 or 8. I have never allowed Windows Update to install any
Malicious Removal Tool, and because I only use Internet Explorer for Windows
Updates (my primary browser is Firefox 3.6 including its latest version and
updates), I find no value nor interest to upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 or
8.

According to Add or Remove Programs, I have the following Microsoft .NET
Frameworks installed...

To ensure my Registry is not effected by any new program installation, I
typically back it up prior to the install. However, because I install or
updated software several times each week, once the new or updated program
appears to work as described, I generally delete the Registry backup file.
This may seem severe, but once I install a new program or update, the
previous Registry backup become moot. Moot because it has no value since
restoring it also removes any newer Registry entries, updates, etc.

I am running Windows Installer 4.5 and have not experienced any problems
with it.

I manually update Windows XP by visiting the Windows Update website once a
week, and utilize the CUSTOM option to check for Windows XP updates.

For non-Windows operating system software, I visit other websites like
MajorGeeks and FileHippo. I try to download new software direct from the
author's website(s) whenever possible.

When available, I generally update my DirectX files. Recently, I installed
DirectX June 2010 Redistributable (with filename directx_Jun2010_redist.exe).
As with all previous versions, I extracted this file a temp directory,
F:\DirectX_Install. Once extracted, I executed DXSETUP.EXE to install the
DirectX update. Once complete, I typically leave the Application,
Application Extensions and Cabinet Files, in place until the next DirectX
Redistributable is released - and when it is, I delete all files in
F:\DirectX_Install before executing the new DXSETUP.EXE application file.

While I have executed the DirectX Redistributable DXSETUP.EXE application
file several time in the last 2 to 3 years (concurrent with the respective
DirectX Redistributable release), I have never looked for the DxSetup.exe
file elsewhere on my HDD. Therefore, I have no idea where it is supposed to
be located. I read one (confusing website's) expert suggest that it is
located in the C:\WINDOWS\System32 directory. When I looked, it was not
there - so I copied the latest DXSETUP.EXE file to it. Unfortunately, it did
not correct or resolve the problem - the problem remains.

I am running DirectX 9.0c, and ran the DirectX Diagnostic Tool and no
problems were found.

Note that I removed Computer Name and Page file - their info is irrelevant,
in my opinion.

I do have a DirectX directory, that I believe was created with the initial
install of Windows XP SP2 that came with my Dell. This directory,
C:\WINDOWS\system32\DirectX, is empty of files. However, there is a Dinput
subdirectory, C:\WINDOWS\system32\DirectX\Dinput, that contains 33
Configuration Settings files, and 147 PNG Image files.

Regarding anti-virus programs, I run Avira AntiVir 9.0.0.422 - where I run
Avira AntiVir Guard to protect my system from real-time virus and
adware/malware problems. I manually update the definition files at least
twice daily.

Regarding adware/malware problems, as a redundant program to Avira, I also
have Ad-Aware AE installed - though in a passive mode only. In other words,
Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service is disabled when Ad-Aware AE is not being run -
with its' Real-time Protection off. In addition, the Ad-Watch option is also
disabled. In short, I rely on Avira for adware/malware protection and use
Ad-Aware to manually scan my system one, maybe twice a week.

I do not schedule any software updates, and always disable the automatic
update option or preference.

After running both Avira and Ad-Aware, my system appears to be free of
viruses and adware/malware.

Well, the idiots at Intel decided it would be fun to not only use
a name like that for *their* software, but to also include that
name in their documentation. (In other words, this isn't just a
file which has a low profile.)

Initially, when I started reading your problem description, it sounded
like the Intel software needs some DirectX support, which is pretty
silly as a premise. A network installer usually doesn't have much in
the way of an interface.

I downloaded the Intel installer, and it does have a dxsetup.exe in it.
It is part of Intel ProSet. I opened this download with 7-ZIP, which makes
it possible to look inside downloads, without installing them (as long
as they aren't InstallShield protected).

I can't tell you what is broken, but I'd say that some part of the
Intel installer broke when you installed 15.2. An attempt to install 15.4.1

entire 15.2 package on purpose, or something did fail while 15.2 was being
installed. Options might be Windows Installer Cleanup, Revo Uninstaller
or the like, but I lack the skills to guide you here. If someone
else wants to take a shot at it, I'd start by looking at the contents
of the PROWin32.exe installer.

Chances are, there will be an Intel installation folder, somewhere
on your C: drive, and you could look there to see if the files you
see inside the PROWin32.exe, exist on your C:. It could be something
simple, like a path variable to the Intel folder, wasn't set up
properly. Or, it could be some much more complex problem...

Your extraordinarily comprehensive analysis is sincerely appreciated. )

I searched my HDD for PROWin32 and there were no results.

Prior to posting, I did find one Windows Installer Package, PROSETDX.msi -
which happens to reside in the subdirectory of Drivers that came with my PC.

Clearly, I am no expert regarding software and PCs, but from what I can tell
- due to the diagnositics associated with Version 15.2, it is functioning
correctly. Course, I presume that does not mean the installation was 100%
error free - particularly given the current DxSetup.exe problem.

Prior to posting here, I spent several hours reviewing a significant number
of Google hits that appeared to have problems similar, but not exactly, like
mine.

Now, today, given your insight and preliminary analysis, to further my
investigation, I think that I am going to need another PC. Why? Well,
unless I can find a simple solution, I could uninstall 15.4.1, but that will
drop my ability to connect to the Internet.

Concerned that the DxSetup.exe problem may be deeper than simply
uninstalling this Intel Driver, scrubbing my Registry and HDD of all traces,
then I would start by installing the original Intel Driver that came with my
PC, and if it worked, I would migrate to 15.1.1 then 15.2 and finally to
15.4.1.

On the other hand, if the DxSetup.exe problem is far deeper or more
difficult to resolve, I would HATE to forfeit my ability to connect to the
Internet with this PC.

UGH! What a fricken dilemma.

Unfortunately, I cannot determine which DXSETUP file is appropriate for
Windows XP. I suppose the ones that are not will advise me during the
install, but this approach does not give me any confidence because it seems
so elementary. In addition, the possibility of malicious files is always a
concern.

So, in short, I prefer to seek other solutions at this time.

I am running DirectX 9.0c, and ran the DirectX Diagnostic Tool and no
problems were found.

Note that I removed Computer Name and Page file - their info is irrelevant,
in my opinion.

I do have a DirectX directory, that I believe was created with the initial
install of Windows XP SP2 that came with my Dell. This directory,
C:\WINDOWS\system32\DirectX, is empty of files. However, there is a Dinput
subdirectory, C:\WINDOWS\system32\DirectX\Dinput, that contains 33
Configuration Settings files, and 147 PNG Image files.

Regarding anti-virus programs, I run Avira AntiVir 9.0.0.422 - where I run
Avira AntiVir Guard to protect my system from real-time virus and
adware/malware problems. I manually update the definition files at least
twice daily.

Regarding adware/malware problems, as a redundant program to Avira, I also
have Ad-Aware AE installed - though in a passive mode only. In other words,
Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service is disabled when Ad-Aware AE is not being run -
with its' Real-time Protection off. In addition, the Ad-Watch option is
also
disabled. In short, I rely on Avira for adware/malware protection and use
Ad-Aware to manually scan my system one, maybe twice a week.

I do not schedule any software updates, and always disable the automatic
update option or preference.

After running both Avira and Ad-Aware, my system appears to be free of
viruses and adware/malware.

To supplement my investigation, I ran HijackThis and it generated the

It do not know if it has any relevance, but I recently removed Microsoft
Messenger (entirely) from my system. Having never used it, its' Service was
disabled, and its' option in Outlook Express had been removed, for over 2
years.

Other than reinstalling my operating system, anyone have a solution or
suggestions of how I can resolve this Missing or corrupted DxSetup.exe
problem?

investigation, I think that I am going to need another PC. Why? Well,
unless I can find a simple solution, I could uninstall 15.2, but that will
drop my ability to connect to the Internet.

The Intel installer is only going to work, if you have an Intel
network adapter.

Have you checked the control panel "Add or Remove Programs",
and checked to see what Intel software claims to be installed ?
Either 15.4.1 or 15.2 package ?

I'd probably go back and install the 15.2, subject to the
Add or Remove control panel having all of the Intel network
adapter software gone.

It should be leaving behind a folder, which would include
things like that dxsetup file.

The purpose of attempting to reinstall 15.2, would be to
try to get the "dxsetup" error message to go away. And
secondarily, to make it possible, if necessary, to uninstall
the package complete if you so desire.

I can see a PROSETDX.msi file in this folder inside the
download file. The MSI file is about six megabytes in size.
I would have expected to see DxSetup.exe in the same folder
on the C: drive.

3 years ago. ;o) Bonus, the same Intel 82562 is still installed today.

I have been using 3 or 4 of them for the last 2 years.

I have never used the Driver Update Utility, and was surprised by the
results. Surprised because the Intel system read my PC as a Windows 2003
Server, and the driver it recommended was EXACTLY the same one I had
downloaded. Nevertheless, I downloaded it again and used the extraction
without installation process to view the of directories and files associated
with this driver.

I have additional investigation to pursue and will update you once I have
resolved this problem.

Since posting the above reply, I chose to review the links further and then
decided to CHANCE using Intel's Driver Update Utility. Even though this
Utility incorrectly ID'd my operating system as Windows 2003 Server, the
Driver associated with the download had the same Digital Signature as the
15.4.1 version that I had download for Windows XP Home.

Feeling intrepid, I proceeded forward with the Intel Driver Update Utility
15.4.1 downloaded PROWin32.exe file.

After downloading the PROWin32.exe files recommended by Intel's Driver
Update Utility, I decided to (again) review the online Read Me (htm) file
[http://downloadmirror.intel.com/18717/eng/readme.htm] before executing the
PROWin32.exe install. Having never extracted files without installing them,
I chose to employ the /f parameter and specified the destination path.

Believing the /f parameter would function as it is described - Extracting
the Files Without Installing - I anticipated reviewing the files, as you had
done with the 7-ZIP. Unfortunately, though not completely unfortunate, this
is not how the process went. In short, with the /f parameter incorporated
precisely as defined by Intel, the Windows 2003 Server PROWin32.exe began
installing in the same manner I have witness several times in the last 2 or
so years. So, I just went with the flow.

Once the install appeared complete, I checked the path location that I had
specifed after the /f parameter, and there it was, a new directory named
Intel 82562 based Network Controller. This directory has five File Folders,
two Rich Text Format files, and a TIC File. I opened each of the File
Folders, which include a Win32 subdirectory, as well as other subdirectories.
And in the \Intel 82562 based Network Controller\APPS\PROSETDX\Win32
directory, I found the DxSetup.exe Application and Configuration Settings
files, as well as the PROSETDX.msi Windows Installer Package - just as you
said you could see. As you may guess, I was now smiling W-I-D-E-L-Y.

Next, I proceeded to open Device Manager and check the version of the new
install, and there it was . . . Intel PROSet Version 15.4.98.0 . . . not
Version 15.4.1 that I was expecting, but that wouldn't be the first time a
manufacture mis-labeled or did not properly identify its drivers or files (as
you know all to well, I am certain). Oddly, the 15.4.89 release has the same
Intel 82562 10/100 Network Connection Driver, 9.13.41.0, as the 15.2 release.
Obviously, Intel was updating issues other than this driver. Then I ran the
various Intel Diagnostics on the Connection, Cable and Hardware - all passed,
so I rebooted, went back online, and proceeded to this newsgroup to inform
you of the results.

There must be something WRONG with the PROWin32.exe file (a file I
downloaded more than once, to insure the one on my HDD was not corrupt or
otherwise defective) that downloads when Windows XP Home Edition is selected
here . . .

I have a Missing or corrupted DxSetup.exe problem...

...and I recall seeing this same error message once, perhaps twice in the2
or 3 months.  

This same DxSetup.exe error message occurred when I was attempting to
install non-essential software programs.  And when the (above) error message
window popped up, I chose to terminate the installation and delete the
non-essential software program.

Currently, this DxSetup.exe error message occurs when I try to install
Intel's Network Adapter Drivers 15.4.1 for Windows XP.  

Back on 2010 April 29, I successfully installed Intel's Network Adapter
Drivers 15.2 for Windows XP, and did not have any problems - in other words,
I did not experience this DxSetup.exe error message.  

My operating system is Windows XP SP3, 32-bit, up to date via Windows
Update, with the exception of Microsoft's Malicious Removal Tools, and
Internet Explorer 7 or 8.  I have never allowed Windows Update to install any
Malicious Removal Tool, and because I only use Internet Explorer for Windows
Updates (my primary browser is Firefox 3.6 including its latest version and
updates), I find no value nor interest to upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 or
8.  

According to Add or Remove Programs, I have the following Microsoft .NET
Frameworks installed...

3.5 Service Pack 1

To ensure my Registry is not effected by any new program installation, I
typically back it up prior to the install.  However, because I install or
updated software several times each week, once the new or updated program
appears to work as described, I generally delete the Registry backup file..  
This may seem severe, but once I install a new program or update, the
previous Registry backup become moot.  Moot because it has no value since
restoring it also removes any newer Registry entries, updates, etc.  

I am running Windows Installer 4.5 and have not experienced any problems
with it.

I manually update Windows XP by visiting the Windows Update website once a
week, and utilize the CUSTOM option to check for Windows XP updates.  

For non-Windows operating system software, I visit other websites like
MajorGeeks and FileHippo.  I try to download new software direct from the
author's website(s) whenever possible.  

When available, I generally update my DirectX files.  Recently, I installed
DirectX June 2010 Redistributable (with filename directx_Jun2010_redist.exe).
 As with all previous versions, I extracted this file a temp directory,
F:\DirectX_Install.  Once extracted, I executed DXSETUP.EXE to install the
DirectX update.  Once complete, I typically leave the Application,
Application Extensions and Cabinet Files, in place until the next DirectX
Redistributable is released - and when it is, I delete all files in
F:\DirectX_Install before executing the new DXSETUP.EXE application file. 

While I have executed the DirectX Redistributable DXSETUP.EXE application
file several time in the last 2 to 3 years (concurrent with the respective
DirectX Redistributable release), I have never looked for the DxSetup.exe
file elsewhere on my HDD.  Therefore, I have no idea where it is supposed to
be located.  I read one (confusing website's) expert suggest that it is
located in the C:\WINDOWS\System32 directory.  When I looked, it was not
there - so I copied the latest DXSETUP.EXE file to it.  Unfortunately, it did
not correct or resolve the problem - the problem remains.

Carefully following the direction of Marc Liron, Microsoft MVP 2010, as

...I executed sfc /scannow, but it did not resolve the Missing or corrupted
DxSetup.exe problem.  Hopefully, it did not create other problems.

It do not know if it has any relevance, but I recently removed Microsoft
Messenger (entirely) from my system.  Having never used it, its' Service was
disabled, and its' option in Outlook Express had been removed, for over 2
years.  

Other than reinstalling my operating system, anyone have a solution or
suggestions of how I can resolve this Missing or corrupted DxSetup.exe
problem?
